Frequently Asked Questions
You’ve got questions and we’ve got answers. These are some of the most frequent questions we get about this course.
Why should I take this course?
This course is designed to introduce students to the knowledge, values, and skills associated with working with an older population of clients. Topics will include the effects of aging on physical, mental, emotional processes as well as socio-cultural, spiritual, and environmental considerations. This course aids the students in developing competency in the areas of engagement, assessment, intervention, and evaluation when working with older adults. Assessing elderly clients is often achieved in a few different ways. Typically, a geriatric social worker will meet with and interview a new client. They might also interview family members and caregivers, such as doctors and nurses, and possibly look at the client’s medical records as well. If the client still lives at home, the home visit is another very important part of this assessment. The geriatric social worker will typically visit his clients at home to ensure that they live in a safe environment and that they have everything that they need.
Assessing their elderly clients can help geriatric social workers determine what they may need.
